The ISTEP is Coming! The ISTEP is Coming!

Backpack Middle Schoolers will be taking the ISTEP on Monday and Tuesday this week.  For non-Hoosiers, the ISTEP is Indiana’s standardized test for students in grades 3-10.  While students are evaluated individually, the results are taken altogether to determine the success or failure of each school and its teachers.  Where students pass, schools and teachers are labeled good; others are labeled bad.  The more students who pass, the better the school and its teachers; the more who fail, the worse the school and its teachers.  So far as I know, no labels are applied to the test-takers themselves, individually or as a group…

Needless to say, our staff has made extensive preparations for this week’s tests.  For instance, we will be following a revised schedule for two days.  Monday morning, Backpackers will be tested for the first two hours (though actual time on test for most will be less than one hour).  They will then attend each of their regular classes for app. 28 minutes per class.  Lessons will therefore be brief, with little to no homework assigned so that our young test-takers, on whom so much depends, may rest and recover for Day 2 on Tuesday.

This round of testing is just Part 1 of the ISTEP; Part 2 will be given during the first week of May.

Wish us well!

Love the tongue-in-cheek. Consider yourselves – individually and collectively – wished well.

How dare you imply the test takers should be held in anyway responsible. The thought of it.
